Practice Stack by Clinical AI Weekly

The Technology Behind a Better Mental Health Practice

Independent, sourced reviews of the software a psychiatric practice runs on: EHRs, e-prescribing, telehealth, billing, and practice automation. Written psychiatry first, by a practicing psychiatrist, for prescribers and the teams who support them.

  • How we make money: Some links may earn us a referral fee at no cost to you. Fees never affect scores, rankings, or what we cover, and we accept no paid placement.
  • Employers: No information from the curator's employers is used on this site, including any employer's software, vendor contracts, or internal documents.
  • No paid placement: Vendors cannot pay to be listed, ranked, or reviewed.

Why a Practice Stack section

Choosing an EHR or e-prescribing setup is one of the most expensive and hardest to reverse decisions a practice makes. Most guides are written by vendors that rank themselves first, or by directories that are not built around prescriber workflow. Practice Stack is written from the prescriber's chair: controlled substance prescribing, PDMP checks, prior authorizations, medication management visits, and what it really costs once the add-ons are counted.

Practice Stack sits next to our AI Scribes coverage. Some practice tools include AI features and we note them when they matter, but most of this section is about the core systems a practice depends on every day.

What we cover

  • Psychiatric EHRs: charting for medication management and therapy, templates, scheduling, patient portals, and reporting.
  • E-prescribing and EPCS: controlled substance prescribing, identity proofing and two-factor setup, PDMP integration, and the add-on fees that sit on top of a base subscription.
  • Telehealth: built-in video versus separate tools, and how each fits into the visit and documentation flow.
  • Billing and revenue cycle: claims, clearinghouse fees, eligibility checks, superbills for out-of-network practices, and billing reports.
  • Practice automation: intake forms, reminders, HIPAA phone, fax, text, and email, prior authorization tools, and measurement-based care such as PHQ-9 and GAD-7 collection.
  • Switching and data export: what you can take with you, in what format, and what happens if a vendor shuts down.

How we evaluate

Practice Stack follows the same methodology and editorial policy as the rest of ClinicalAIWeekly.

  • Documentation first. Facts come from vendor pricing pages, help centers, terms, and BAAs, plus regulators and state agencies for rules such as EPCS and PDMP requirements. Every claim links to its source.
  • A standard spec table for every product: published price, EPCS availability and cost, PDMP integration, telehealth, claims and clearinghouse fees, BAA, AI features, and data export.
  • Prescriber workflow fit. We look at the steps a psychiatric prescriber repeats every day and how many clicks, logins, and add-ons each one takes, based on vendor documentation.
  • Evidence labels. Each fact is marked as vendor-reported, documentation reviewed, third-party sourced, or not publicly disclosed. We do not test products hands-on; every fact comes from public documentation or third-party sources.
  • All-in cost, not list price. Where vendors publish prices, we add up the base plan and the add-ons a prescriber usually needs. Where they do not, we say "Not publicly disclosed (ask vendor)" instead of guessing.
  • Dated and rechecked. Every page shows a last-verified date, and changes are logged on the corrections page.

What this is not: General business software information, not medical, legal, billing, or compliance advice. Confirm current pricing, state rules, and BAA terms directly with the vendor and your own advisors before you buy.

Who curates this

Practice Stack is curated by a practicing psychiatrist, the same curator as the rest of ClinicalAIWeekly. Rankings and "best for" verdicts are reviewed by the curator before publishing.
